The Ring of Fire (See here on Google Maps) – A skatepark in the western suburbs of Melbourne, located in at the 234 Fun Galore complex (Fun City Go-karts place)

After you navigate the 3 flights of stairs you arrive at this pretty awesome kidney bowl – two pool ledges, wallride, nice coping and made of MDF – gentle to falls. The only downside, being up on the top floor of this old mill, is that the roof trusses are pretty damn close..better get your helmet on. The second floor also contains a smallish street setup, but if you come here..you’re here for level three.

The light was pretty horrible, and only having one flash at my disposal tonight I decided to bounce the flash off parts of the almost white roof – bigger light source for a less harsh, softer light. Didn’t end up working too badly either as I’m pretty happy with the way these shots came out. Im usually pretty easy going on my strobes typically using 1/16th and above – however as im bouncing the light here, needed to bump it up a bit.

You could argue Tom’s makio shouldn’t really make the cut due to part of his skate cut off from the table…But meh, I liked it.

This is one of those shots out of the archive. I took it with my good old Canon 300D – My first SLR. Its dated 20/4/2006 and from what I remember I was just wondering around the city, sighted this, lined up the shot and fired away. This is on Little Collins St, looking down The Causeway (one of the many interesting lanes in Melbourne). The Big Issue is typically sold by homeless people trying to make some money, earning half of the profits from the magazine they sell. Good to see these people giving it a shot, instead of just slumming it around the place begging for money. I keep on saying I want to buy one… and I will one day.

Video editing skills (or lack of..)

Sessions from Rampfest, Prahran and Ballarat skateparks featuring Jamie Nicholson, Hayden Golder and a few others of the Melbourne crew.

Over the past 2 weeks I’ve been doing some filming with my digital camera, wanting to see how it would cope with some of the rollerblading antics that we get upto. That plus I really wanted to use the AFI track.. I liked the build up in it and its not crazy long so pretty easy to get clips for it.

Edited in Sony Vegas, Filmed in AVCHD in SH(best) quality. Music bf AFI.

See, its not all just rollerblading. I shot these awhile back. I remember it being an awesome summer Melbourne day, cars had just been washed..what else was there to do but grab some photos? With Marco’s car the sun was setting as well which gave a nice ambient. No need for strobes here. I’ll dig up the exif info later.

The NZ brothers showing off their vert skills. Love the invert, something you rarely see these days. In fact, I’m still waiting a new wave of vert skaters to pop up..you’d think the amazing skills of the Yasutoko brothers would some sort of inspiration?! Who wouldn’t want to learn how to do a twister (360 double backflip)…
